The Advent of Suspenders. Suspender belts can be traced back to the eighteenth century at which time they were used primarily to hold the pants/ trousers up. They were made as strips of and were attached to the trousers through buttonholes. Back then they were worn as undergarments, and it was never heard of to spot them, as that was a sign of outright indecency, so they had to be concealed underneath other pieces of clothing. It is in the nineteenth century that braces (modern day suspenders) were introduced. They were manufactured and designed by Albert Thurston. They were attached with leather loops. The suspenders come in various designs. There are two things that are used to distinguish the designs of a suspended, and that is the shape formed at the back and the attachment method. The oldest design by shape formed at the back was the H-suspenders where braces joined to form what the letter H at the back. However, these designs have evolved with the latest designs forming a Y which was preceded by an X. The second type of categorization was dependent according to their attachment to the trousers and the earliest designs were attached using buttons. Leather loops followed buttonholes as an attachment method and later metal clips were utilized. It is worth noting that even the materials used to make them have also changed. for instance the materials used have evolved from ribbons to woven wool. The woven wool material is also known as the box fabric. Despite using different materials all suspenders served the same purpose; holding up trousers. It was only high waist trousers that were considered fashionable then, and therefore belts were not typical. The trousers were high-waist that belts could not be used; only braces were suitable.
Looking On The Bright Side of Fashions
When the history of suspenders is raised, some names cannot be omitted from that discussion. Additionally it is such famous people as these who first designed and manufactured the suspenders. These earlier designs have only undergone a little changes since their introduction into the clothing industry. One such figure is Albert Thurton who is considered to be the father of the braces because he was the first to design and manufacture them. In 1736 Benjamin Franklin, a diplomat, and publisher, introduced the use of the H-shaped suspenders as part of the Fire Department of Philadelphia’s uniform. Samuel Clemens, also known as Mark Twain, received a patent for Adjustable and Detachable Straps for Garments in 1871.
